Counting the Cost (week 1)

Luke 14:25-33
New Living Translation (NLT)
The Cost of Being a Disciple
25 A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, 26 “If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. 27 And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.
28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? 29 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. 30 They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’
31 “Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him? 32 And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away. 33 So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.

Definition of disciple:  one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another..

discussion questions:

What does it mean to carry your cross?

Look at cliff note:

It means putting God above everything in your life..

It means making god our first priority and being prepared to pay the price to live the life that God has called us to.

What is the cost??

1 Corinthians 6:1-11
New Living Translation (NLT)
Avoiding Lawsuits with Christians
6 When one of you has a dispute with another believer, how dare you file a lawsuit and ask a secular court to decide the matter instead of taking it to other believers[a]! 2 Don’t you realize that someday we believers will judge the world? And since you are going to judge the world, can’t you decide even these little things among yourselves? 3 Don’t you realize that we will judge angels? So you should surely be able to resolve ordinary disputes in this life. 4 If you have legal disputes about such matters, why go to outside judges who are not respected by the church? 5 I am saying this to shame you. Isn’t there anyone in all the church who is wise enough to decide these issues? 6 But instead, one believer[b] sues another—right in front of unbelievers!
7 Even to have such lawsuits with one another is a defeat for you. Why not just accept the injustice and leave it at that? Why not let yourselves be cheated? 8 Instead, you yourselves are the ones who do wrong and cheat even your fellow believers.[c]
9 Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Romans 13:13
New Living Translation (NLT)
13 Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy.

Main points:
- pursuing righteousnous is gods cost for following him and giving up all ungodliness.
- we as christians... are called to judge each other according to the word of god.. not to condem or shame but to lovingly correct and exhalt to a high place.
- break down of individual unrighteous acts... main focus - sexual immorality, homosexuality, drinking

2 Timothy 1:7
New King James Version (NKJV)
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

main point 1 -- being drunk is opposite of having a sound mind
main point 2 -- God has given us the power to overcome and the ability to love.
1 John 4:18
New King James Version (NKJV)
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

main point 1: If your afraid to give up your lifestyle for him.. ask god for more of his love.. loving God and having an overflow of Gods love  in you will compell you to give up even you most prized possessions for his namesake

main point 2: Gods love can loose you from any form of bondage you have... sex, drugs, partying etc.

main point 3: having more of gods love.. refines you and forms you into christ image..

Matthew 6:33
New Living Translation (NLT)
33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

main point - giving up what you think you need , things that god says you can do with out, it  really doesn't cost you anything because he intends on giving you something better than what you could have imagined to replace it with.

examples... of gods replacements:
- gf/bf  for wife/husband
- sex for peace, purity, and a better sense of self worth
- treasures on earth, for eternal treasures in heaven
- job for a career
-  responding to conditional love for responding to unconditional love. (world vs god)
Alternative to not changing:
James 4:4
New Living Translation (NLT)
4 You adulterers![a] Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.
Psalm 23
New Living Translation (NLT)
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
2 He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
3 He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
4 Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.
5 You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever.

Psalm 23
New King James Version (NKJV)
The Lord the Shepherd of His People
A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;

And I will dwell[a] in the house of the Lord
Forever.

--- This is how we all should desire to feel.. complete and whole.. assured that go is on our side

- repent for not counting the cost
- pray that you would begin to live righteously, and that he would give more of his love so that you may do it
- recieve prayer

Out of Order!

·         Get back to the manufacturer
o   We have got to stop going through third party repairs
*  Wouldn’t it make sense to take a broken Pepsi machine to the Pepsi Company?
·         Many of us have been trying to take our brokenness somewhere else and G-d is tired of that
*  Matthew 28:11
·         “Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest”
·         Stop waiting to break down before you get repairs
o   Any good machine has something called “Preventive Maintenance” done on it

                                                    -   Work on you before you work on somebody else!
- Make sure you are allowing G-d to do the preventive maintenance on you
·         Realize that producing is not enough
o   You have got to be producing the right thing
- You can’t be a Pepsi machine giving people coke products….yes you are still producing, but you’re not producing the right thing
o   1 Corinthians 13:1-3
-  “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
·         It is not enough for us to have and work in spiritual gifts…If you are not working with them in love, you are still lost!
·         Don’t be content with just being “worked on”
o  There should be a measurable change that happens when G-d works on you.  You wouldn’t be content with somebody keeping your car in the shop for weeks and continuing to give you the “I’m working on it” situation
-  But that’s what we do to G-d.  We keep HIS product in the shop and we keep giving him the “I’m working on it” line…The bad part is that He already paid for it
·         Don’t be okay with being out of order
o   When you are out of order you cannot produce! When you are out of order you cannot function at full capacity!

Semester So Far.....

Hey everyone!!!

I hope everyone is having a lovely spring break and vacation.  SU Wesley Foundation has been having a successful semester so far.... Praise God!

We thank God for his presence and the awesome speakers and words that he has blessed us with so far this semester.

Over the past few weeks... Wesley foundation has "kept it real." We have discussed:
  • Time (seasons) - From one season to the next God is perfecting us in the divine qualities of Christ. What season are you in? What qualities has he perfected in you? What still needs to be perfected? Do you understand that your are called to be perfect and actually know what being perfect means?
  • Power of the Spoken Word... Will you speak life or death over yourself and your situation? Do you recognize the power that God has given you? Does your speech reflect that of Jesus?
  • God aka love... In 1Corinthians 13.... Replace the word love with God... God is love therefore everything love is, is God. Amen.
  • Holding on to God's Promises ... Do we continue to believe in the Lord and what he has said even when his promises seem dead?.. So dead that they seem to have no life what so ever... Do we stick by God's word knowing that what he starts he will surely finish and what he has said will surely come to past because he, The Almighty Father, has said it?
  • Ice Breakers-- Breaking ourselves into the new Christian lifestyle that we have devoted ourselves too... Understanding why there are certain things from the world we cannot carry with us during our walk with Jesus and how these weights & sins conflict with who we are.. "Children of the Most High God."
  • Unconditional love - Does the way we love God come in second place when compared to the way we would love or do love our husbands/ wives, fiancé, partner in courtship? Would you or do you go the extra mile for God the way you go the extra mile for them, if not greater?
Next week --- Monday March 25,2013 we will be having another Ice Breaker session.... feel free to come and ask as many questions as you would like --- All questions are anonymous and are up for discussion.... We want to build each other up and we can do it if we are all willing to communicate as the family unit that Christ has called us to be.

Note --- You do not have to be a Christian to attend Wesley Bible Study or be sure of where you are in Christ... Just know that when you show up you are going to get some Jesus lovin'. ;)

WE LOVE YOU GUYS... BE ENCOURAGED!

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Time & Seasons

What are we doing with our time??

Ecclesiastes 3:1,2,4
1.To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.

2. A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant; and a time to pluck what is planted;

4. A time to weep; and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance.

What is time?

In Greek word zeman (zem-awn) --  means time or season

So when I say, “What are we doing with our time?”…. I am also saying “What are we doing with our season?”

             What does a season look like?

God gives us seasons-- Seasons for growth, rest, work, school, learning, teaching etc.

Every season we experience has a beginning and an end.  Exp. Finals week.

Some seasons are reoccurring, while others you experience once and that’s it. Exp. Summer and Winter/  Being 5 yrs old.

Some seasons are very long, while others are very short.  3 months vs. 1 day or hr.

Being “In season”….

Being “in season” in the Greek means that we are in our opportune time.

Exp. Season of organization and time management.

- Special anointing, providing efficiency

            What does it mean to be efficient?

To be efficient means:

A.  Acting or producing effectively with a minimum of waste, expense, or unnecessary effort.

B. Exhibiting a high ratio of output to input

Explanation--So with God’s anointing we can:

1. accomplish his goals with ease.. You don’t have to think about it.

                Efficiency Cont.

2. God has given you access to all the tools you need to accomplish his goals... Spiritual tools as well as Natural tools. Exp. Diligence (spirit)/ Academic Coach (natural)

3. Operating in this season is not really costing me anything… I’m mainly gaining.

Cost:  some free time

Gain: Organization, Peace of Mind, Better Grades, Perfection in another Divine quality of Christ! –will explain.

God has a focus for every season!

God has a purpose for every season.

There is not a season that you experience that does not work for his glory when you are in Christ.

Romans 8:28 -And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

If God felt that a particular season or goal would keep your from your destiny or push you outside of his will, he wouldn’t allow you to go through it….

So when we experience different seasons and trials when we are in Christ his goal is to use them to perfect us in the divine qualities of Christ.

Glory to Glory

When we move from one season to the next we are supposed to be moving from one perfection to the next  a.k.a glory to glory.

In Greek Glory means Doxa... the word Doxa itself has multiple definitions but the one that we are going to use today is " an especially divine quality“

In seeking to be like Christ we are seeking to develop ALL of his divine qualities... To become perfect in every area of our lives.
Perfection

Matthew 5:48 - be ye therefore perfect, even as your father which is in heaven is perfect.

What does it mean to be perfect?

The word perfect in Greek is referred to as Teleios.

Teleios in short definition literally means perfect or full-grown... In its long definition it means perfect, complete in all its parts, full grown, of full age,  or complete in Christian character (aka complete in the characteristics of Christ).

So stop saying nobody is perfect… Or you will never be perfect--- Because you are speaking death over yourself if you do! – Instead speak Life!

How do we speak life instead of death? Exp.

“Out of Season”

In Greek “out of season” means akairos meaning out of due season, inopportunely, or untimely.

         —What happens when we try to do things “out of season”?

You move outside of God’s anointing and will.

Characteristics of moving out of God’s will a.k.a. operating outside of its due season:

More input than output. Extreme effort little to no results. Exp. Working hard to be in a relationship but its not working out for you. - didn’t happen, wasn’t what you wanted, no one is in agreement with you.

Keep facing obstacles. Exp. 1 - Moses delivered the Israelites from Egypt, still Pharaoh pursued them (bible). Exp. 2 - 13 yr. old trying to work.

You experience a different result then what was intended… Exps. Divorce, Quit, You sin.

You become overwhelmed. – You feel like you are doing to many things at one time…  Playing catch up!  - now the furnace is hotter.

Isaiah 48:10- behold I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

Refined  means purified or made perfect.

Affliction means suffering or pain.

What happens “Out of Season” cont.

5. You become stagnant. You try to stay in this season or God keeps you in a season.. Not moving forward.

Stagnant means you are not moving or flowing.

1 Corinthians 3:2 - I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal.

Carnal in Greek means fleshly or worldly.... So to be carnal means to be of the world or like those in the world who still act on their sinful nature (or ways). Exp… moving from flesh to spirit/ law to love.

Sometimes when you are acting out in disobedience towards Gods divine will.. He may not allow you to move or flow into another season until you have…

1. mastered the one you are in. Exp.  Achieving discipline/ Singleness

2. have been obedient to the tasks he has set out for you to do and accomplish. Exp. Follower who wants to be a Leader.

       SO! How do we know what season God wants us to be in?

If you can hear the lords voice you should be asking him to tell you what he wants you to focus on or what season you should be in… Focus on trusting what you hear!

If you can’t hear God’s voice you should be praying that he would direct your steps and send you wise Godly counsel  to help you along the way until you can…. Have Faith that he will begin to speak to you!

Season – Trust & Faith.

             Take your Seasons Seriously!

Our seasons should be very precious to us and should not be taken lightly....

We should be starting and finishing our seasons with excitement, endurance, and diligence (while relying on the Holy Spirit to help us every step of the way)...

So that  at the end of every season we may receive our prize of even greater perfection and glory. – becoming more & more like Christ.

1 Corinthians 9:24 - Do you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time and Season Activity

Before Teaching
Pass out a note card to everyone
Ask everybody to think about what they feel G-d calling them to do in this season…in this moment/timing of their lives

a.     It can be personal, spiritual, academically
  Have them keep their note cards at their seats
  Tell everyone as we talk tonight to edit and make additions to the note cards.

After Teaching
Explain that we are going to intentionally celebrate the great things that G-d is doing this semester.  Tell everyone that as G-d does great things for them, we encourage them to share it! As they write it on a post-it-note (it can be anonymous), we will add it to a poster board and celebrate all that G-d has done at the end of the semester!
